LPC-Associate Supervision at Kenyatta Black Counseling

Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is an exciting and challenging journey that requires not only education and training but also ongoing mentorship and guidance. At Kenyatta Black Counseling, we understand the importance of selecting the right supervisor as you work toward your licensure. The supervisor/associate relationship is one of collaboration, trust, and growth. As an LPC Associate, you need a supervisor who will provide you with the tools and support necessary to navigate this critical phase of your career.
Choosing the right supervisor is one of the most important decisions you will make on your path to becoming a professional counselor. I encourage you to do your due diligence in selecting a supervisor who possesses the experience and qualities necessary to guide you through what can sometimes be a confusing and overwhelming process.

Here are some reasons why you should consider working with me as your LPC Associate supervisor:

Certification and Expertise: I am certified in Trauma Model Therapy, having received extensive training from the internationally renowned psychiatrist Dr. Colin Ross, who is working on his adult inpatient unit in Dallas, Texas. My experience in this highly specialized environment provides me with an in-depth understanding of trauma, dissociative disorders, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. This training is a cornerstone of my work as a supervisor, and I am equipped to provide you with expert guidance in these critical areas.

  2. A Collaborative Approach: The supervisory relationship is a two-way street. It is essential that both you and I believe the relationship is beneficial for your growth. As your supervisor, I will take the time to understand your theoretical background, previous practicum experience, and professional goals. Together, we will tailor a plan that suits your individual needs as you work toward licensure.

  3. Access to My Supportive Network: Working with me means you gain access not just to my expertise but also to the knowledge and wisdom of my entire team. I maintain close relationships with my former associates, many of whom now have their own thriving private practices. Our professional relationship has evolved from supervisor/associate to supportive colleagues and friends.   4. Comprehensive Supervision: My theoretical orientation is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and while I incorporate an eclectic approach, most of my techniques are rooted in CBT. My supervision sessions will include a combination of one-on-one and group discussions aimed at building your professional identity, enhancing your counseling skills, and ensuring adherence to relevant ethical codes and legal statutes. Additionally, multicultural competency is essential to our work as counselors, and we will explore how cultural identity intersects with your therapeutic practice.

  5. 24/7 Access for Ethical Dilemmas: In the field of counseling, ethical dilemmas often arise outside of regular supervision hours. I offer 24/7 access for those moments when you need immediate guidance or support with an ethical concern. You will always have someone to turn to when difficult situations arise in your practice.

Supervision Fees and Schedule

The State of Texas requires LPC associates to complete a minimum of 18 months and 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience to obtain licensure. LPC associates are allowed to have two supervisors, and half of their monthly supervision can be obtained through group supervision. I require my supervisees to attend group supervision, which is held on either Monday at 6:00 PM or Wednesday at 11:00 AM.

I charge a flat monthly fee for supervision, and details regarding payment arrangements will be provided during the onboarding process.

Supervision Focus Areas

In our supervision sessions, we will focus on key areas essential for your development as a counselor:
  1. Professional Identity Development: You will be guided in discovering and cultivating your unique style as a therapist.

  2. Counseling Skills: We will work on refining your therapeutic skills, from building rapport to effectively applying therapeutic interventions.

  3. Adherence to Ethical Codes and Legal Statutes: We will ensure that you are fully prepared to navigate the ethical and legal aspects of counseling practice.

  4. Client/Case Conceptualization: You will develop your ability to conceptualize client issues, creating treatment plans that reflect best practices.

  5. Multicultural Competency: We will discuss how cultural factors intersect with your work and ensure that you are equipped to provide culturally competent care.

Throughout our time together, you may also be asked to reflect on personal experiences—both past and present—that inform your work with clients. This reflective process is essential for both personal and professional growth as a counselor.
